Theory and Modelling of the Radio Emission from X-ray Transients

چکیده

The radio emission observed from some X-ray transients (XRTs) complements X-ray and optical observations of these sources, because it originates not from thermal processes but from suprathermal relativistic electrons radiating in a magnetic eld. The theory and modelling of radio emitting XRTs has concentrated, of necessity, on the frequency spectrum and the temporal decay of the radio ux density after outburst. However, the most recent observations have revealed the connection between the radio and X-ray outbursts, and have provided the rst spatially-resolved images of these sources and their evolution.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

On the peak radio and X-ray emission from neutron star and black hole candidate X-ray transients

We have compiled and analysed reports from the literature of (quasi-)simultaneous observations of X-ray transients at radio and X-ray wavelengths and compared them with each other and with more unusual radio-bright sources such as Cygnus X-3, GRS 1915+105 and Circinus X-1. There exists a significant (> 97% likelihood) positive (rank) correlation between the peak X-ray flux PX and radio flux den...

Physical Interpretations of Rotating Radio Transients

Nearly a dozen of Rotating RAdio Transients (RRATs) have been discovered recently. These objects share similar spin parameters with normal radio pulsars but distinguish themselves from normal pulsars by being quiescent most of the time and only becoming radio bright occasionally. We discuss two possible interpretations to the phenomenon. The first model suggests that these objects are pulsars s...

Multiple ejections during the 1975 outburst of A 0620 − 00

The well-known black-hole X-ray transient A0620−00 was a bright radio source during the first part of its outburst in 1975. We have revisited the available data and find for the first time evidence that the source exhibited multiple jet ejections. Rapid radio spectral changes indicate the addition of at least three new components which are initially optically thick. From single baseline interfe...
